Burning, gritty, watery, or fluctuating eyes can make work, reading, driving, and contact lens wear uncomfortable. Dry eye is not the same for every patient, which is why lasting relief often begins with identifying what is disrupting the tear film.
At North Coast Optometry in Oceanside, we provide advanced dry eye evaluations and personalized treatment options, including OptiLight IPL and OptiLift technology. The right approach depends on your symptoms, eyelid function, meibomian glands, eye health, and other individual factors.
Dry eye can develop when the eyes do not produce enough tears, when tears evaporate too quickly, or when the components of the tear film are out of balance. One common contributor is meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. These glands along the eyelids produce oils that help prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.
Common symptoms can include:
Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
Red or irritated eyes
Excessive watering despite feeling dry
Fluctuating or temporarily blurry vision
Discomfort during prolonged screen use or contact lens wear
Because several issues can produce similar symptoms, simply trying different artificial tears may not address the underlying problem.
OptiLight uses intense pulsed light, or IPL, delivered to specific areas of skin below and around the eyes while the eyes are fully protected. It is designed to help improve signs of dry eye disease associated with meibomian gland dysfunction.
In the United States, OptiLight is indicated for patients age 22 and older with moderate to severe signs and symptoms of dry eye due to MGD who meet specific skin-type and medical criteria. It is intended to be used alongside other dry eye measures rather than as a stand-alone cure.
For appropriate Oceanside patients, OptiLight may be incorporated into a broader plan that also addresses eyelid hygiene, tear-film support, gland function, or other contributors to dry eye.
OptiLift uses non-invasive technology designed to stimulate and condition muscles around the eyes and can also incorporate radiofrequency energy. At North Coast Optometry, OptiLift is available as part of our advanced technology options for patients being evaluated for dry eye and eyelid-related concerns.
OptiLift is different from OptiLight. It does not carry the same specific indication for treating dry eye disease. Instead, its role may relate to supporting periorbital muscle function and blinking in selected patients.
Because blinking helps spread the tear film across the eye, eyelid function can be an important part of a comprehensive dry eye evaluation.
There is no single best treatment for every patient with dry eye. Some people may benefit from advanced in-office technology, while others may need artificial tears, warm compresses, eyelid care, prescription medications, or other therapies.
Before recommending treatment, we evaluate the eye surface and consider what may be contributing to your symptoms. Medical history also matters because certain health conditions, medications, skin characteristics, or implanted devices may affect whether OptiLight or OptiLift is appropriate.
Results can also vary, and dry eye is often a chronic condition that requires ongoing management rather than a one-time solution.
If your eyes regularly burn, water, feel gritty, or become uncomfortable during screen use or contact lens wear, a dry eye evaluation can help determine why.
Persistent redness, significant pain, strong light sensitivity, discharge, or sudden vision changes should be evaluated promptly rather than assumed to be routine dry eye.
